Tendinitis of the Foot & Ankle
Tendons are soft tissue structures which attach muscles to bones and help our joints move. Essentially, think of your tendon as a rope connecting the muscle to the bone. Often times as a result of excess stress, weight, work or injury the tendons can become injured. This is referred to as tendinitis. Anytime you see/hear “itis” following a medical term, it simply means inflammation. Tendonitis simply means inflammation of the tendon. It can be some mild inflammation of the “rope”, or it can be tearing of the tendon or a complete rupture. This can present as pain, swelling, loss of movement, redness, weakness and difficulty weight bearing. If these symptoms present it is important to receive medical care to properly identify which tendon is involved, the extent of involvement and the most appropriate treatment plan.
